Aussie Meat Pie
A True-Blue Down-Under Favorite!
1 onion, finely chopped
500gms (1 1/4 lbs.) ground beef
1 cup water
2 crumbled beef stock cubes or 2 tsp. stock powder
1/4 cup tomato ketchup
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
Pepper, to taste
1/2 tsp. ground oregano
Pinch nutmeg
3 Tbls. plain flour
1 sheet ready-rolled shortcrust pastry, thawed
1 sheet ready-rolled puff pastry, thawed
Beaten egg to glaze.


Cook onion and beef without fat until meat is well browned.

Add 3/4 cup water, stock cubes, sauces and seasonings.

Blend flour with remaining water to make a smooth paste. Add to meat and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Boil 5 minutes. Cool.

Line a lightly greased 8 inch (20 cm) pie plate with shortcrust pastry.

Spoon in the cooled meat filling.

Damp edges of pastry with water and top with puff pastry. Press down to seal. Trim edges. Glaze with beaten egg.

Bake in a very hot oven (450 degrees F or 230 degrees C) for 15 minutes, reduce heat to moderate and cook another 25 minutes or until pastry is golden.
