Hi all,

I have a recipe that I would like to make this weekend that calls for monosodium glutamate. What the heck is monosodium glutamate?

Is it a natural spice/herb or a man made substance? :?:

Thanks for your help, Jayne

Hi Jayne,

Check out these two websites for info on MSG.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate and http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/msg.html

The bottom line is MSG = BAD

Interesting question. The answer is yes and no. In fact, the FDA is having issues with foods containing monosodium glutamate labeled as "All Natural"

Here is a great quote about MSG from an article that I will link at the bottom of the page.

Quote:
Claiming MSG is natural because free glutamic acid appears in tomatoes is sort of like saying cocaine is natural because it's derived from ingredients found in the coca leaf.

Here is the article: http://www.newstarget.com/005778.html

I hope this helps.

Tom

It appears the only reason msg is still on the market is that it is an inexpensive way for companies to add flavor to the processed foods they make.

Read your labels!

Thanks for the info guys.
